End of an error and continuation of another
As the dust settles on the just concluded general elections, voters in Taita-Taveta County could be celebrating or being remorseful over the outcome of the polls.
While majority are celebrating the ouster of governor Granton Samboja through the ballot by the little known Andrew Mwadime, they should be ruing the reelection of senator Mwaruma.
Despite the key role of senator being oversight, Mwaruma turned a blind eye to all the economic mess Samboja inflicted on this county as the governor’s acolytes and bootlickers licked the county coffers dry.
The work of a watchman is to guard the property of their employer and if thieves break in and steal when the watchman is sleeping, the only recourse to justice is to have that sentinel sacked.
Sadly Taita-Taveta voters have decided to stay put with their sleeping watchman, probably because they do not know how important the role of oversight is in guarding county resources.
Though not on any clear records ,talk has been rife that it’s Mwaruma who lobbied other senators to overturn Samboja impeachment by the county assembly at the Senate.
If that be true, then our senator owes us an equivocal apology for making this error stick with us long enough till the voters kicked the Mwakishimba infamy out through the ballot.
On the other, hand, while governor Samboja was busy with his shenanigans, Mwaruma was busy making political capital through his Mwaruma Foundation, which he was using to campaign for reelection.
Running foundations is not the work of the senator but can only be welcome as a side hustle after performing the main role.
Even government employees know too well that running side hustles which interfere with their work performance is not allowed.
Actually, since the beginning of devolution Taita-Taveta County has failed to have proper oversight both from senators and county assembly.
Our first senator Dan Mwazo disappeared from the radar after elections only to resurface five years later seeking to be the governor. He lost to the highly controversial Samboja in 2017.
Mwazo’s second stab at the gubernatorial seat for the second time this year also ended in disaster after polling a paltry 11,543 votes compared to Mwadime’s 49,901 votes.
Despite having initiated a number of development projects as the Voi MP with CDF funds more than a decade ago, that is now water under the bridge and despite trying to use that little success in the past as a campaign tool, it failed badly.
THIS MAN SAMBOJA . ..
Samboja met his waterloo in the hands of his former Maths teacher at Ngangao high school Andrew Mwadime Katuu.
Coming from a poor and obscure background, Samboja could not afford exam registration fees in form 4 and was bailed out by Mwadime.
Despite scoring grade D- Samboja has tried to make people believe he went to Kenyatta high school where his namesake cousin actually attended and whose high school certificate he has being brandishing around..
Despite having no formal training in any field, Samboja was cleared by IEBC with a fake degree from Kenyatta university in 2017 while in 2022 IEBC cleared him with another fake degree from Costa Rica.
The sound beating by Mwadime has proved Samboja to be a political paper tiger. Once abandoned by the system, he has no life of his own.
In fact the worst mistake was to turn against Uhuruto.
Samboja has in the past made unsubstantiated and caustic remarks about Ruto, sometimes daring the deputy president in broad daylight.
On the home front, as Taita-Taveta residents were yearning for development, Samboja was busy in and out of courts , dealing with cases challenging his academic credentials.
Despite glaring evidence that his tertiary level education papers were counterfeit, IEBC cleared him twice to run, till voters planted the last nail in his political coffin by voting him out of office this year.
Thanks to his deep pockets and fake generosity, the controversial and at times capricious governor has managed to quell the storms around him, even by compromising some media outlets from exposing his rotten underbelly.
Viva voters in Taita-Taveta County..
Samboja was impeached by Taita-Taveta County MCAs in September 2019 over allegations of gross misconduct.
All the 30 MCAs, led by then Rong’e ward MCA Harris Keke ruled that Somboja was unfit to be Taita-Taveta governor.
However, the impeachment was overturned at the Senate with the impeachment grounds by MCAs being dismissed as inadequate.
Finally, the Taita-Taveta voters have made the last verdict by sending the controversial governor packing through the ballot.
