Why engineer Mtalaki is the man to watch in  the forthcoming governor’s race in Taita-Taveta county

 


As the general elections draw closer, the gubernatorial seat in Taita-Taveta county has continued to attract   ambitious and promising candidates who might send the current government of Andrew Mwadime packing come August next year.

One of them is engineer Anderson Mtalaki who has been working at the Kenya Ports Authority, at some point serving as the container terminal manager.

Most see him as a leader with vision, passion and a proven commitment to uplifting communities through a participatory development agenda and people-centred initiatives.

Though he has been undertaking his professional work diligently and without engaging in politics, Mtalaki is not new in leadership, having served as a student leader and mobiliser while at the University of Nairobi representing students from the then Taita-Taveta district.

In fact his decision to take a stab at the Taita-Taveta governor’s race is seen by many as a breath of fresh air in the wake of the dismal and pathetic performance by the incumbent Andrew Mwadime who calls himself “Wakujaa.”

Whereas the first governor who was also an engineer John Mruttu had started on the right footing, the performance of the second and third governors, Granton Samboja and Andrew Mwadime has been wanting if not outrightly dismal.

On the other hand the  people from Voi sub county which has the largest number of registered voters intimate that it’s time for the fourth governor to come from the area in keeping with the spirit of regional balance because the other sub counties have already had their share: Mruttu(Taveta), Samboja(Wundanyi) and Mwadime (Mwatate).

The only candidate who fits that bill so far is engineer Mtalaki.

One of the bold and laudable initiatives by Eng Mtalaki is the impressive football tournament sponsored by the Mtalaki Foundation.

Featuring more than 250 FKF-registered teams, the tournament aims to empower youth, nurture talents and tackle the menace of drug and substance abuse.

The tournament whose finals will be held in December this year has a grand prize of Sh500,000 for the winning team while the first and second runners up with bag Sh300,000and Sh 200,000 respectively.

“Mtalaki is the right candidate to take over the gubernatorial seat as he has demonstrated that he can deliver where his predecessors have failed”, said Damaris Mkachu a Voi resident.

“In fact Mtalaki might be the first governor to break the one-term jinx in Taita-Taveta county governor’s post”, said Mkachu, a community mobiliser.

Qwetu sacco upbeat as it unveils Sh 2.3 billion 2019/2020 budget Qwetu sacco has weathered the tough political and economic challenges to unveil a more than Sh2.3 billion budget for the 2019/2020 financial year. Reading the budget estimates during the special delegates meeting held at Vacani hotel at the outskirts of Voi town, Qwetu sacco CEO Mr Charles Kaba pointed out that the budget estimates represented a growth of Sh158m.
