Dawson Mwanyumba, the first Coast minister in Jomo independence cabinet

     He was among the pioneer Coastal politicians and a no- nonsense leader, sharp in his ideas as he was fast with his fists. In fact the only politician who could have matched Dawson Mwanyumba in those days was Paul Ngei who had also earned notoriety for spoiling for fights with those he disagreed with.     Mwanyumba made history as the only minister from Coast region in Jomo Kenytta’s first cabinet.    As minister for power and communications, he oversaw the ambitious expansion of the country’s electric power generating capacity in the 1960s, including the building of the 150 megawatt Kindaruma power station.    Undocumented reports say that at one time Mwanyumba locked horns with a leader in the provincial administration who was said to be at the beck and call of Kenyatta.    Mwanyumba was reportedly summoned to State House Nairobi where it’s said Kenyatta literally caned him till the minister cried out like a baby.   ...

Qwetu sacco upbeat as it unveils Sh 2.3 billion 2019/2020 budget Qwetu sacco has weathered the tough political and economic challenges to unveil a more than Sh2.3 billion budget for the 2019/2020 financial year. Reading the budget estimates during the special delegates meeting held at Vacani hotel at the outskirts of Voi town, Qwetu sacco CEO Mr Charles Kaba pointed out that the budget estimates represented a growth of Sh158m. The CEO revealed that the lions share (60 per cent) of the projected growth would come from owners’ capital or long term deposits. “Out of the projected growth of more than Sh 158m,Sh 95m would come from the long term deposits” said Mr Kaba. Other anticipated growth areas include institutional capital contributing Sh 43m(27 per cent) provisions and other liabilities at Sh24m(15.2 per cent) and demand deposits at Sh 12m(7.8 per cent).   Positive developments for Qwetu as the sacco opens up a new branch in Mombasa Qwetu Sacco ,the leading savings and credit cooperative society in Taita-Taveta county has spread its wings further by opening a branch in Mombasa to ensure that the Sacco’s ever growing membership obtains the required services at the coastal city. Addressing delegates during this year’s Special Delegates Meeting(SDM) held at the Two Oceans hotel in Voi,the sacco chairman Mr Simon Mbashu said the new offices at Kengeleni Lights in Kongwea were strategically positioned to cater for the growing sacco clientele at the coast. “The project whose budget was approved by the delegates was successfully completed and the regulator(Sasra) certified the branch to proceed with operations.
